Elena Li Chow, author of "Behind Closed Eyes", spent years inside the machinery of major film studios — Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, Sotheby's China — before she sat down to write *Behind Closed Eyes*. In this conversation, she argues that none of that time was lost. Reading contracts, negotiating with government officials in Beijing, deciding which billboard image would move an audience: all of it was, in her telling, a form of artistic training conducted in disguise. The work that looks like it interrupts a creative life is often the work that makes that life possible — financially and imaginatively both.
